“Networking is hard for most of us,” says instructor Kilby Blades. "It is also utterly necessary for writers in terms of saving time, unleashing opportunities and staying informed. Even in a profession as solitary as writing, who you know and how you engage with the broader writing community can influence your career as much as your work itself."

For beginning through more experienced writers, networking generates personal and professional connections that can lead to publication, job opportunities and writing partnerships. And it’s not just about networking— it’s about finding community, which can be critical to maintaining perspective and preserving optimism in an industry that is notoriously tough. Your writing community will help you weather the vicissitudes of this profession.

This class will give concrete examples of how networking can pay dividends for writers. We will discuss how to find writing communities that align with what you write, and our experience together will offer practical advice for planning your networking year. We’ll consider strategies for transcending social anxiety and navigating professional networks, even if you’re an introvert. Most importantly, the class will show you how to multiply the return on effort you’re putting into your writing goals and share tips to make networking fun.
