What should your next steps be after you’ve written something amazing? What’s the path to getting your work out into the world? “The creative writing world is paved with pathways for writers to lead their projects into the light,” says Kilby Blades, “but navigating those roads isn’t easy. And, at every checkpoint are gatekeepers. In this class, you’ll learn who those gatekeepers are and how they work.”
The class will introduce a range of competitive opportunities in the writing world, from querying for agent representation and traditional publication, to submitting for contests and mentorships, to applying to literary retreats. We will discuss how to find opportunities that align with what you write and how to craft and polish your submissions. We will cover how to choose a writing sample, how to write a synopsis, and—of course—how to present yourself in your actual application or query letter. Some class time will be allocated to workshopping a single query that each student creates. Beyond in-class discussion and feedback, the instructor will offer a query critique to each participating student.
